Stuart Nicol

Stuart Nicol was a loving, creative, inspiring father and grandfather - as well as a master of his craft. Unfortunately, he passed away during 2020, leaving the world a little dimmer without his light. During his life, Stuart took inspiration from all corners of the globe, but especially the beauty of his home and community. His love of art in all its forms is still alive in every pen mark and brush stroke, in all the pieces he left behind.

Stuart’s formative training was undertaken at the Ilam School of Art in Christchurch during the 1950’s, and later he was a pupil (and for some time, a co-tutor) of Mary Archibald in Upper Hutt. He was a life member of the Upper Hutt Art Society and since relocating to Paremata in 2002, he also became involved with the Mana Arts Society where he often led classes. Stuart’s work was shown at exhibitions of both societies, and also frequently shown at the New Zealand Academy of Fine Arts in Wellington. If you look closely, you will also see his work displayed in a number of cafés and shops in the wider Porirua area.

As a mentor, family man, and artist - Stuart enriched the lives of all those around him. Now, we hope that his artworks can go on to keep his memory alive. It is our wish for Stuart’s legacy to live on through his art, for everyone who holds it in their hearts and homes.

Rebecca Coulston

Stuart's granddaughter and Andrea's oldest daughter. Rebecca apprenticed under Stuart since she was a child, learning everything she knows about the craft from him. Now, Rebecca is working hard behind the scenes to restore all of Stuart's paintings to their original glory.
